Virtual Wholecloth 10, 11, 12 from Virtual Quilter

I like quilting to have feature shapes in a design, with boring fill in patterns to fill the background, similar to the way pieced and applique designs are usually separated by a contrast background fabric.

The background filler in the second deign I would do with a thread matching the background, while the more decorative shapes would be in a contrast colour.

The design above is the last in this project series which was started a long time ago, and one day I should make myself start a new, and better, project with the same theme.

Virtual Wholecloth Quilt 9, 10 from Virtual Quilter

A puzzle for today …. find the lines which should be changed. I love the overall design, but have noticed a few of the lines based on pieced blocks which are not quite the way I intended them to be.

This is an old project file, and was done before I had access to wide fabrics, so added a small border to cover up some of the joins I would have to include to get a king size quilt.

Virtual Wholecloth Quilt 6, 7, 8 from Virtual Quilter

I use a lot of background quilting on applique and pieced blocks to fill in spaces around the design, but I also often use plain background for some blocks, and those are quilted with the lines of applique designs.

The cross hatching in these designs is what I use as a filler around applique, but I have left out the applique and only quilted the lines of the applique designs.

This is what the back of an applique quilt would look like, and as I love looking at the backs of quilts why not forget the applique and pieced tops ...

Love the second too, and love the both thread colours as well as the quilting designs.
